Our team is composed of highly accomplished researchers and academics from all over the world, all with graduate degrees in Economics or related disciplines, excellent publication records in leading academic journals, and a cumulative professional experience of more than fifty years in areas related to international development and global studies.

This extensive network of researchers collaborates with us in designing proposals and conducting our empirical work. Our team of researchers ensures a high quality perspective as almost all members hold Ph.D. degrees in Economics, Demography, Political Science, Human Development, and related fields. Our staff has vast experience using quasi-experimental and randomized controlled trials, econometric and demographic techniques, and a highly knowledgeable on survey design and data collection issues.

Florencio Lopez de Silanes

Chairman of the Board

Florencio Lopez de Silanes is Professor of Finance, and Associate Dean of International Affairs at SKEMA Business School. A Mexican national, he received his PhD in Economics from Harvard University. His lifetime academic citations place him among the three most widely cited business authors in the world according to the Social Science Research Network. His research interests and main publications are in corporate finance, corporate governance, family firms, law and finance and regulation . He received the distinction of “Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur” by the French government for his academic contribution.

​Martin Valdivia

Vice-President and Treasurer

Martín Valdivia is Senior Researcher at GRADE, Lima. His fields of interest include health, poverty and social policy, micro-finance and rural development. He has carried out research projects and consultancies for international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, USAID and others. Dr Valdivia has published extensively in journals sucha as the Review of Economics and Statistics and the Journal of Development Economics. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota.

Arlette Beltrán is Vice-Rector of Research and full Professor in the Department of Economics at Universidad del Pacífico, Lima. She holds a PhD in Economics from Catholic University in Lima and received a Masters degree in Economics from Georgetown University (ILADES).. She is interested in education, health, and gender issues, and has published in several peer-reviewed journals, most recently, Applied Economics. She has also consulted extensively, mostly in issues related to gender in Latin America.

Alberto Chong

Executive Director

Alberto Chong is the Executive Director of DRS. He is a Full Professor in the Department of Economics at Georgia State University and holds a joint appointment with the College of Education and Human Development. He pursued PhD studies in Economics at Harvard and Cornell Universities, and received his Ph.D. degree from Cornell. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals among them American Economic Journal: Applied, Review of Economics and Statistics, and many others. He has consulted with USAID, UNDP, 3ie, the World Bank and the Government of Peru, among others. His research interests include economic development, political economy, impact evaluation, and public policy.

Pierre Nguimkeu

General Coordinator

Dr. Nguimkeu is the Regional Coordinator for Africa. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Georgia State University. His research interests are in Econometric Theory, Applied Econometrics, Statistics, and Development Economics.  He received his PhD from Simon Fraser University. His research and studies have been funded by several grants including the Lindau-Nobel Council, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and others. He also serves as Economic Adviser to the Cameroon Council of Business Managers and Professional Associations (GICAM).

Fernando Aragón is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. He is interested in exploring the role of natural resources, local institutions and, the environment on the living conditions of local communities. He emphasizes the use of empirical methods and analysis of economic effects at local level.  Professor Aragón received his PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science and has published in journals such as American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Economic Journal, and others.

Fernando Aragon

Nasser Ary Tanimoune is an Associate Professor in the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa, Canada. His research interests are mostly in the macroeconomics of developing countries, in particular West Africa, with emphasis on money and banking issues. He received his PhD in Economics from the Université d'Orléans in France and is a national of Niger.

Nasser Ary Tanimoune

Professor Baggio, an Italian national, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Connecticut. His research interests are mainly in environmental and resource economics, ecological economics, and health economics. In particular, he specializes in studying causes and consequences of ecosystem changes in the context of aquatic ecosystems. Professor Baggio received a PhD. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Maryland. Previous to coming to Connecticut, he worked as a senior researcher and lecturer at the Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland.

Michele Baggio

Paul Carrillo, a national from Ecuador, is a Full Professor in the Department of Economics at George Washington University, in Washington, DC. His research interests are in applied microeconomics, in particular, urban and real estate economics. Dr. Carrillo's current research focuses on explaining the search process of buyers and sellers in the housing market, the measurement of residential rental prices, and the design of cash-transfer programs in low income countries. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Virginia.

Ana C. Dammert is Associate Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Professor Dammert’s research interests are motivated by welfare issues in developing countries. Her recent work is concerned with the effects of public policies on child labor, schooling, and health. She has published in top field peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Health Economics, and others. She teaches courses in development economics. Professor Dammert received her Ph.D. degree in Economics from Syracuse University in New York.

Fernanda Estevan, a Brazilian national, is an Associate Professor at the Sao Paulo School of Economics, Fundação Getulio Vargas in Brazil. Professor Estevan’s research interests are mostly in education, and political economy, and health. She has published in top field peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, the Canadian Journal of Economics and others. She received her Ph.D. degree in Economics from Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium.

José Galdo is an Associate Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He is also Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn, Germany. His research lies at the intersection of applied economics and the evaluation of public policy using both experimental and non-experimental approaches. He has substantial research and field experience in evaluating public policy in countries as diverse as Peru, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Mongolia. His work has been published in the Journal of Health Economics, Labour Economics, among others. Professor Galdo holds a PhD degree in economics from Syracuse University, New York.

Jose Galdo

Paul Haslam is an Associate Professor in the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa in Canada. A citizen from Canada, he obtained a Ph.D. in political studies from Queen's University, Ontario.  His teaching and research interests span both international development and international political economy. His current research focuses on corporate social responsibility, resource nationalism, state-firm relations in Latin America (particularly Argentina and Chile), and the international regulation of foreign direct investment in Latin America.

Gianmarco León is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He is also a research affiliate at the Barcelona GSE. His research focuses on political economics in developing countries and more broadly on development economics. He has published in top academic journals including American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, the Journal of the European Economic Association, among others. He received his PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Gianmarco Leon

Eduardo Lora, a Colombian national, is an associate at Harvard’s Center for International Development. He has been Chief Economist of the IADB and Executive Director of Fedesarrollo, Colombia. He is President of the Latin American and the Caribbean Economic Association and editor of Vox.Lacea. His academic and professional awards include the title of "Distinguished Alumnus" of the London School of Economics, where he obtained his M.Sc. in Economics. He has published in numerous academic journals and has been the coordinator and main author of several books on Latin American development issues.

Stanislao Maldonado is a Full Professor with the Department of Economics at the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia.  His research interests lie in the intersection between development economics, environmental economics and political economy. Professor Maldonado received his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Susan W. Parker a Full Professor in the School of Public Policy in  the University of Maryland. Previously, she was a professor of economics at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics in Mexico. Her research focuses principally on education and health in developing countries and in particular on the evaluation of programs and public policies. She has published in top journals, including  the Journal of Economic Literature and the Journal of Political Economy. She holds a PhD and M.A. in Economics from Yale University and edits the journal Latin American Economic Review (LAER).

Roland Pongou is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Ottawa in Canada. Professor Pongou’s research interests include network applications, social statistics and demography, organizational economics, and economics of fidelity. He has published in top field peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Health Economics, and others. Professor Pongou received his Ph.D. degree in Economics from Brown University in Rhode Island.

Naoko Shinkai, a citizen from Japan, is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of International Development at Nagoya University. Her areas of interest are mostly in international economics and development economics. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals mostly on countries of Southeast Asia. Professor Shinkai received her M.A. in Economics from Hitotsubashi University and her Ph.D. degree in Economics from the University of Michigan.

José Tavera is Professor of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Universidad Católica, Lima. He received his PhD in Economics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His areas of interest are industrial organization and development economics. Professor Tavera has published locally and internationally and has consulted with several Latin American governments.

Charles Towe, a citizen from the United States, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Connecticut. His fields of interest include behavioral economics, housing policy, environmental economics and policy, and the economics of land use and land conversion decisions. He has a publication history in top academic journals and field journals including Econometrica and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. He is an environmental economist who earned his Ph.D. at the University of Maryland in Agricultural and Resource Economics.

Charles Towe

Gustavo Yamada, a Peruvian national, is Full Professor of Economics and Director of the Research Center at Universidad del Pacifico in Lima. He is also member of Executive Board at the Central Bank of Peru, advisor to the National Council of Education, member of several ministerial and private sector committees, and an opinion writer at “El Comercio”, the most important newspaper in Peru. Professor Yamada has published in peer-reviewed journals such as World Development and Economics Letters in areas related to labor, education, and macroeconomics. He received his PhD in Economics from Columbia University in New York.
